A dignified and impressive ceremony majfced the first commencement exercises of the Rappahannock County High School Wednesday evening, June 6, in the school auditorium^ The hall was packed to the walls with parents, visitors and pupils, and many, unable to find standing room had to remain outside.
The program, opening with the traditional processional, was followed by the invocation, by Rev'. A. Paul Thompson. Then came the salutatory, by Betty Dellinger, an honor graduate. A musical number by the Glee Club, under the direction of Miss Charlotte Golladay, came next, after which Phyllis Hudson, another honor graduate, presented class data. H. B. Winfrey, principal, spoke briefly to the graduates and to the audience. The president of the class, Barbara Bryvn, presented the school with a check for $110, the proceeds from the senior play, to be paid on the new stage curtain. An added feature of special interest to her present and former pupils was |;he presentation, by Superintendent Gasque, of a beautiful silver bawl, the gift of her fellow teachers, to Mrs. Landon Luttrell, who retired this year after many years of successful teaching.
The valedictory was delivered by Charlotte Pullen, the highest hondr graduate. Another selection by the Glee Club, the candlelight processional and finally, the benediction by ‘Mr. Thompson, closed the exercises. Leland Walter, president of the Student Council, presided.
Members of the first graduating class of Rappahannock High School were: Peggy Anne Black, Barbara Ann Brown, Louise Virginia Cloud, Frank Daniel Coffey, Jr., Betty Jean Dellinger, Luther Daniel Harrington, Phyllis Eloise Hudson, Christine Marie Jenkins, Della Mae Mills, Charlotte Anne Pullen, Marion Gilbert Scott, Leslie Leland Walter, Lois Beverly Walter, Helen Louise Zinn.
