After 16, a lady’s birthday becomes like her underwear—listed as unmentionable. How many birthdays she has had is most surely not a topic of pleasant conversation.
For a number of years my birthday meant extra teasing—I got my full share of it the other days of the year, also. The final straw in the insults came some years back: my sole claim to fame lay in the fact that Mussolini chose my natal day to declare war on the United States! That I resented! The teasing was bad enough, but to have that over-inflated wind-bag join with the paper-hanging nuisance of Germany and pick my birthday to blow off with some more hot air— well, it was just more than could be borne!
It did something to my ego. I didn’t expect the State to djeclare a holiday for my birthday, but neither did I enjoy being ashamed of the day.
But all this has changed! This year I discovered that I share my birthday with what I consider the greatest living American!
I had always said that I was going to choose another birthday, but I never could decide whether to pick Thomas Jefferson’s, Benjamin Franklin’s, or Woodrow W’ilson’s. There is no thought in my mind now to even consider changing my birthday. I’m as
