It pays to weatherstrip doors and windows!
Extension specialists at V.P.I. say cracks around doors and windows can account for as much as 25 percent of the heat loss in an average home.
Weatherstripping alone will cut down both heat losses and drafts, and the savings in fuel and int
creased comfort soon justify the cost. When weatherstripping is used along with insulation and storm windows, the benefits increase. >
The best weatherstripping is the metal kind which requires grooves cut into the window sashes and frames. This kind of insulation requires special tools in the hands of a skilled worker.
However, there are several other kinds of .weatherstripping on the market which can be tacked to the sash or frame.
The cheapest kind is felt which comes in a roll. It will give reasonably good service for one or two seasons, but tends to shrink and break, and then needs replacing.
A more durable and effective type is made of light metal ©15 wood with a felt interior. The felt protrudes far enough to make a tight seal between the sash and frame.
Directions for installing each kind usually are provided by the manufacturer. One general rule is to have the windows or doors closed and locked while attaching the strips. This makes for a closer I fit and better seal.
Ilf the crack at the bottom of the door is too wide to be sealed with weatherstripping alone, screw a strip of wood to the bottom edge [ of the door.
Sometimes there are other cracks and small openings around door and window frames which should be closed with caulking compound. It is usually possible to borrow or rent a caulking gun to ; apply the compouhd properly. ;State Horticultural Society Hosts to .National Group
