Today, a member of Congress who goes home at the end of a session needs to keep looking over his shoulder toward Washington. There’s always the chance he’ll find the Capitol gone—carted off to Kansas City.
Apparently the angle shooters haven’t thought of using RFC funds to remodel the Capitol into a Pendergast meftiorial clubhouse, but one never can be too sure these days.
In the half-light of intrigue and double-dealing, the public has caught glimpses of a shadow government. Political confidence men operate in an atmosphere of connivance and corruption, and officials sworn to uphold the laws of the United States look the other way.
