for the security and preservation of the United States. Our leadership must have confidence and support if the official voice of the United States is to be Recognized on both sides of the Iron Curtain as tile voice of a determined and united people. Hope remains strong when the clouds of disaster hover, as long as the people have faith in their government. But for the people to retain such faith, the thinking and the conduct of those in high places must be such as to justify faith in their competence, courage and integrity.
The qualities which combine to produce general confidence in national leadership in a time of grave national crisis are not to be found in the Nation’s Capital today.
During the last few weeks, I have had the pleasure of visiting many communities in the Seventh Congressional District. Most of those with whom I have talked have not expressed the faith in the honesty, integrity and efficiency of our leaders which Speaker Rayburn says they should have. Instead they have expressed themselves in indignation and anger. They have demanded—and with every right-to know just what has been going on in Washington, anyway.
I've had to say, frankly, that I share their indignation and anger. And I’ve had to admit that the best Congress has been able to do has been to keep one step behind the connivers, ehiselerS and crooks who move brashly about our Nation’s Capital.
