The Speaker complains about lack of faith in the lymesty, integrity and efficiency of our national leaders. Those responsible for that lack of faith include the military aide who sandbagged federal agencies in behalf of get-richquick operators; and the White House physician who gambled in commodity futures, and the tax collectors who stole money wrung from the sweat of the people.
Lack of public faith is born of quick paroles and pardons for lawbreakers who • are “right” politically and of lethargic law enforcement, particularly as to gangsters who ante up for political campaigns.
These persons, and those who appointed them and maintain them in high office, are the ones responsible for lack of public faith in our National leadership, and the fact that the Nation is in a serious emergency only makes matters worse.
It can never be proved, but it is my firm opinion that the Soviets would never have dared to open war in Korea, or to murder 5,560 American boys, if American leadership had commanded the kind of united support at home and respect abroad to which the American people are entitled.
Now, your son and my 10-yearold son must give up the pursuits of peace to enter the military service to protect the Nation from the mess in which we have been plunged by the ineptness, the weakness and the rascality of the Truman Administration. Speaker Rayburn says we should' . be loyal Democrats, and I’ll follow that advice by standing by the precept of Democratic . President Grover Cleveland who considered' a public office a publi? trust, and not the softest racket of all. *
The Speaker told the Southern Governors he wants “to be friends with all Democrats, on all sides.” But my hand of friendship will not be offered to those on the crooked side.
