If I tried to tell the whole story, we’d spend the rest of the week on the sordid details. Deep freezing* units; $9,000 pastel mink coats; stuffed ballot boxes; the ghost of Tom Pendergast; the racket boss who is ready with- his ill-gotten funds to contribute heavily to the campaign chest; the alarming epidemic of bad health which has kept high officials from the witness box and forced them to resign under fire; the multiplicity of trails leading into tangles of favoritism and corruption in the Bureau of Internal Revenue—all of these are symbols of deterioration of morality in present day public life.
Even more appaling is the attitude to be found in the highest levels of our government, an attitude that permits public officials to deny the existence of corruption and disloyalty—then to minimize, and even to forget it. And finally, to proclaim, “I’ll vote for them regardless, otherwise we might lose our committee assignments’’.
