Ladino clover-orchard grass once again has come up as beet of pasture mixtures tested by researchers at Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station.
Dairy scientists at the Station, 'who used the entire dairy research herd last season to test the value o{ three different pasture mixtures for milk production, have tabulated these results: -Ladino clover-orchard grass produced the greatest amount of total digestible nutrients and milk per acre. It gave 6% percent more nutrients and 10.4 percent more milk than did ladino clover Kentucky 31 fescue. Ladino doverorchard grass produced 26.4 per cent more nutrients and 16.6 per cent more milkeper acre than did) alfalfa-orchard grass pastures.
Net gains of body weight! followed the same pattern, the (highest net gains occurring on N ladino clover-orchard grass.
The researchers said an inter* dating observation was made in ... respect to the way the cows re* ■ •ponded whenever they were turned on a new pasture to graze. On the first day of grazing milk production always dropped regardless of the pasture mixture. On. the succeeding three days, mfik production went up, until the fourth ' day when it again declined. The researchers say it appears that a > ■ higher producton could be maintained if the cows wore allowed to graze a new pasture lot every ^ fifth day. Grazing longer than this may cause a lowered milk produc•tion.
