now wrong this noisy minority is! More than any other economic sftetem, Our capitalistic system is in conformity with Christian principles. It is the one system that recognizes the worth and dignity Christ taught by word and example.
Moreover, capitalism gave the individual his first real opportunity. It released him from bondage and enabled him to live his1 own life, express his thoughts and to worship according to the dictates of his conscience.—This was aptly expressed by Dr. Harold R. Husted, minister of the First Baptist Church of Plainfield, N.J., when he said:
“The more our government attempts to control the 'economy, the more it must attempt to control the actions of individuals and take away their freedom. It is not more government in business that we need, but more moral integrity, honesty, unselfishness, and the spirit of brotherhood in the lives of the citizens whp are the foundaion of this democratic land. Christianity and our economy, based upon free enterprise, are inseparable."
From time to time, I receive letters from readers expressing the opinion that clergymen have no business to engage in politics and to take a stand either pro or con regarding our economic system. To deny a “man-of-the-cloth” the right to engage in politics is virtually to take away his American citizenship, surely too great a sacrifice to ask, even of a minister.
As to a minister not expressing his opinion regarding our economic system, that is heer nonsense. As a spiritual leader, he has an obligation to do so. The churches should be concerned about the survival of our capitalistic system. Its destruction would bring about some form of totalitarianism, which would recognize no moral law. Churches would be under attack, and ultimately freedom ^of worship forbidden. We Americans would find ourselves in the untenable position of being forced to worship the state and a handful of powerful bureaucrats at its helm.
