More than two hundred years ago,” says the writer, “George Washington surveyed the town of Washington, Virginia. Lately, a woman mayor and her alliwoman city council have been surveying the town a bit themselves. As a re* suit, grass no longer grows in the streets of Washington, stray dogs do not roam the town and there are no dark street* with broken " street lamps.
During the past year they’ve _ been able to institute better town ; housekeeping, as well as tend their own, is observed.
The account is highly complementary, “Young and pretty as a cover girl, Her Honor, Mayor Davis, is the wife of a Justice Department ' attorney, George H. Davis Jr., has three young children as well as a town to manage. The election all started tue*-v much as a joke, Dorothy Davis admits, someone just happened to say that town housekeeping was bad and that the women could do a better job of it. The little town of 250 took the women up on it. Trial Justice, B. M. Miller took over their campaign and they were swept into office.”
