Election Draws Near
Community PMA elections will be held in each of Rappahannock County’s (5) farm communities on Friday, August 29, H. S- Barksdale, chairman of the PMA county committee, announced today.
At these elections, farmers in each community will vote for three farmers to serve on the community committee, for a delegate to the county convention to elect a PMA county committee for 1953, and for alternates. Voting will be by the ballot box method, Mr. Barksdale said, the Ecumenical Church.
Any farmer can vote if He is owner, operator, tenant or sharecropper on a farm participating in the Agricultural Conservation Program or if lie is carrying out conservation practices in accord with that program. Also, a farmer may vote if he is eligible for participation in any, other PMA programs. There is one important change in voting eligibility this year. Persons under 21 years of age are not eligible to vote unless they are in charge of farming operations on the entire farm.
The effectiveness of ACP, price support, and marketing programs will depend a great deal on the type of PMA committeemen who farmers will select, Mr. Barksdale said. The concentration of the Agricultural Conservation Program in 1953 on the problems of individual farms adds to the need of able committeemen.
Committeemen elected on August 29 will commence immediately to visit farms in their respective communities and assist farmers in selecting the most needed conservation practices. Mr. Barksdale said it is PMA’s objective to complete the sign-up under the 1953 ACP l»efore the beginning of the year.
