“This program gives the sanitarian a practical background of knowledge and experience that will help him meet the demands of his job from day to day,” Dr. Shanholtz said. He stated that this type of training has become necessary in order to qualify sanitarians to cope with increased technical demands in the field of sanitation.
Training was given in health department organization, the prevention of communicable diseases, bacteriology and the part it plays in transmission of diseases, health education and public relations. Specific courses in sanitation included sewage disposal, water supply protection, food and milk sanitation, tourist lodgings, summer camps and other recreational, facilities, schools, and insecf’* and rodent control. Extensive field training supplemented the class room periods. Instructors for the courses were specialists from the State Health Department staff, as well as out-ofstate public health officials.
