Soil Saver Notes
Over 100 farmers from Culpeper, Rappahannock, Orange, Madison and Greene Counties attended the irrigatiotion school lasct week held on the James A. Weaver Farm, Stevensburg. A41 phases of irrigation were discussed by specialists from the Soil Conservation Service and The Virginia Extension Servic.e Engineering design management, maintenance and water supply were discussed by the engineering specialists. Grass and legume mixtures, soil characteristics as they affect irrigation and fertilization of irrigated land were thoroughly aired by the agronomy and soil specialists.
During the school which was held on the bank of Mountain Run under the shade of several Sycamore trees, James A Weaver was making rain on the pasture field just above. Thei water was being applied ait the rate of over 500 gallons per minute. Grass and legume pastures, alfalfa and corn have been irrigated this spring and summer on the Weaver Farm.
