highway department in the day; he must own a mower, and, at the completion of his day's work with the highway crew, he is accommodating enough to help out* his neighbors daring the mowing season. I would surmise, from the small boy’s excited story, that the mower ran into a snake and cut it tp pieces, presenting a gory spectacle. Whftie the other snake came from, or what happened to it must be left to the imagination.
I rather enjoy Ernest’s way of expressing it, however. I’ve heard of “the man that drives the bus’s daughter,” and “the man that runs the hotel’s wife,” but Ernest put those in the shade! ‘The road man that cuts other people’s fields’s snake.” Now, there is a masterpiece! Few of us could attempt to handle the king’s English in that manner!

All the preparations had been made for her club tea that afternoon and the lady of the house decided to take a nap. When her friends did arrive, the madam was nonplussed, to say the least, at their behavior. Her guests simply walked in without ringing the doorbell, greeted her in hushed tones, and treated her with extreme caution. All of them, sitting silently and stiffly in their chairs, seemed ill at ease.
Finally, the mystery was settled when one of the guests got up courage enough to ask her hostess
