Motor vehicle accidents accounted for 211 deaths in this group, while drownings was the second killer in this group, claiming 26 lives. Transportation deaths other than motor vehicles accounted for 17 deaths. Other killers were burns, 16: falls, 10; firearms, 9; machinery, 7; poisonings, 6: and 18 deaths were unclassified.
“Accident prevention means setting up and maintaining precautionary measures,” Dr. Shanholtz said. “The measures that could reduce accidents are known to family physicians, health officers, teachers and safety experts. All these people are ready and anxious to help. But they can do little until parents are well enough informed to see that the needed precautions are set up and continuously maintained in the home, school, and other places where children are exposed to accidents,” Dr. Shanholtz concluded.
