The urbanite’s complacent aspathetic because it’s so naive. Intelligent people who live in rural communities often are better informed than those who dwell in apartment houses. Obviously, the reason is that the rural cousins come to the city to do their shopping, see the good shows ,and attend the important concerts, while city people go to the country only to kill time or look at nature.
Farmers and small-town folk nowadays read metropolitan newspapers, listen to the radio, look at the television, see the current magazines, and buy the latest books. Because they don’t waste so many hours in getting to and from their work and enjoy all the conveniences of this electrical age, they have more time for thought _and reading—with the result that . they know as much as the citydwellers about world affairs, baseball, the movies, politics, dance orchestras, Broadway premieres, and night clubs—and have an intimate acquaintance with fried chicken, fresh eggs, dairy products, tractors, soil conservation, apple cider, and an atmosphere undefiled with factory smoke.—
