Quoting from the Ohio report “Deep rooted plants such as alfalfa and sweet clover grown either with or without grass still offer the most practicable approach to making a deeper unit of soil capable of furnishing air, water, and plant nutrients to growing crops. The process of root decay furnishes channels for water percolation . and air penetration. Furthermore, this process can be made practically continuous if land is reseeded back to meadow a year after plowing the existing legume-grass sod for corn or their cultivated crops.”
