As far as we can tell, this experiment did not have the comparison of an identical surface treatment to the subsoil treatment; which would indicate whether or not the. fertilizer applied in the upper soil as was done in the case of Missouri results would have given as good as results as deep application. Quoting from the Indiana report “Yield increase from subsoil fertilization can only be expected on soils with dense subsoils that are deficient in nutrients. Experiments on such soils on the Purdue Agronomy Farm have resulted in 29% yield increase for corn (75 bushels to 97 bushels per acre) and 9% increase of .soybeans (33 bus. to 36 bushels per acre). So far wheat has not shown any benefit from subsoil fertilization.
