Morris, associate entomologist af VPI, says reports of large numbers of the spiders have come from southeastern and southwestern counties in particular'. and fher likely are a state-wide * problem. At least one man (in • Bedford county) has been bitten, and the result was considerable pain for several days.
All black spiders aren’t black widows. The only way to be sure .is to turn the spider over, and look for a pipk or red "hourglass-shaped spot on its underside. If one black widow is found, most likely there are more, so it’s best to use a house hold chlordane spray on possible spider harborages, such as roof eaves, piles of lumber, trash, rock walls, etc. If possible, remove the harborages entirely.
The black widow is poisonous, more so to some people than others. "“"Extreme pain, nausea, and -swelling may result. There have been fatalities, .but they are rare. If you are bitten, place an ice pack on the affected area and call a physician.
In many cases, the spiders may ■ be cleared out of an area simply by searching for them, crushing them, and destroying the egg masses.
