Fall treatment of tobacco plant1 beds will help in control of weeds and many soil organisms. 'S. B. Fcnne, plant pathologist at VPI, recommends fumigation with methyl bromide. The material may be used either in the fall or in the spring, but it should not be used on soil that is very wet or extremely dry.

Many farmers, he said, have been overlooking the recommendation for fall fumigation, then running into serious difficultes because of bad weather in January and February. Fall treatment is advised because farmers have a wide choice of dates, and because^ with little or no vegetation in the plant bed. the fumigant can go to work maximum effect.

The treatment is most effective when weed seeds have a high moisture content. Methyl bromide should not be used if the temperature of the soil at a 4-inch depth is below 50° F. Best results are obtained when the temperature is above 60°.
