Grazing or removing a part of the last growth after growth stops in the fall is better than cutting during the critical period of from three to four weeks before the average date of the first killing frost and the time growth stops. The agronomists recommend leaving some growth or a mulch for protection of the crowns when alfalfa is cut or grazed after growth has stopped.
The problems is one of the most critical in alfalfa management; and is being studied by the VPI Agricultural Experiment Station.
