Agronomists-at VPI say cutting alfalfa later 'than three to four weeks before the . average date of the first killing frost does not allow time for maximum food storage before growth is stopped by cold weather. If you cut late, you can expect weaker stands,-reduced yield the next year, and increased winter injury.
Since alfalfa will withstand a fairly severe frost, some growth will usually be made up to two weeks to a month after the average date of the first killing frost in the fall.
