Our hospital generator is turned off at 10 o’clock each night. It is difficult but picturesque to work by small kerosene lamps. Often one nurse is occupied with holding the lamp so the doctor can see. It seems that nothing has been normal since I arrived. They had the worst group of accidents they can remember. The population is being increased night and day. One morning at two, I found myself down in the store emptying a card-, board box to put the last baby in.’ Today we had to bring some extra beds from storage We have them rowed up in the middle of the floor in both the men’s ward and the women’s ward.
The hospital building has three stories. In the basement is a storage room for wood, the hospital kitchen and the newest ward for convalescents. On the main floor is the women’s ward, men’s ward and two operating rooms. On the second floor lives a doctor and his family, the anesthetist, x-ray technician and family, and the medical, nursing and business offices. The out-patient department is separate from the hospital and the people enter from the outside.
A cross-section of patient diagnosis might read like this: meningitis, snakebite, gunshot wounds, cancer, malnutrition, gall bladder operation, typhoid, diphtheria, broken back, amputation of arm and kidney stones.
The Baptist Girl’s School is now ten years old. Six of the former students are now teachers in our | schools. Nine of fthem are now nurses, or in nurse’s training. IEx
