Soil Testing: Each year 'this, and the ASC office send 450-500 soil samples to the Agronomy Department at V. P. I. for chemical tests. These tests are free. Test results show: (1) whether or not lime is needed and (2) the fertility level of the soil. Based on this information (plus the soil type the farmer is dealing with and the crop to be grown) economical recommendations can be made so the land owner will know what should be applied to his land to give him the best return on his dollars invested.

Lime is a soil conditioner, it has been described as the key which unlocks jhe door making nutrients available to plants. Also it helps to keep added fertility available. In other words fertilizer aplied to acid soils combines with other minerals in the soil and become insoluable. If the phosphate
