It has come to my attention that in Rappahannock County it i& the policy of the dog warden tb*»liuot stray dogs in the head aa soon as they are caught and brought to his home. The dog warden explained that this is necessary because the county provides no funds to feed such anilaals even for a few days, and I am sure he regrets the necessity of shooting them so quickly as much as other dog lovers.
This inhuman policy, however, means that anyone who loses a beloved dog is apt to find the dog dead the very next day before he has had a chance to claim the pet. Many dogs, as everyone knows, lose their collars and tags while hunting in woods or crawling through fences, and therefore cannot be told from strays when the dog warden picks them up. It seems to me both unnecessary and cruel to kill such dogs as soon as they are caught because the county can’t afford to buy dog food for a week or. so. At this time particularly, when the county is seeking to become known as a recreational area of warmheartedness and friendliness, it seems a poor policy in
