Cattle do a tremendous amount of damage to woodlands. They destroy the water-holding capacity by scattering the humus layer and by compacting the soil. A layer of humus one inch thick can absorb %-inch of rainfall. This humus also blankets the soil and prevents erosion. Woodland soil is usually porous and can soak up a great deal of water before run-off occurs.
Cattle cause defect in the trees by damaging the roots and butts. Insects and diseases attack these wounded trees.
Future timber stands are destroyed when the cattle browse the young seedlings. They are especially fond of yellow poplar. Low value trees which are stunted and deformed are all that are left for future timber growth.
