Stocked with Trout
A total of 440,000 trout will be stocked in the streams of 39 Virginia counties prior to the opening of the 1963 trout season at noon April 6, according to Fish Division Chief Bob Martin. Additional stockings totaling 355,000 are planned for May and June to bolster heavily fished streams. The daily creel limit will be 8 trout as in past years.
Ten percent of the fish to be stocked before the season opening and during the 5-day closure in May will be twoyear-old and surplus brood fish averaging 12” - 18”. Over half of the fish will be rainbows, about one - third will be brooks, and the remainder will be browns. The proportion of browns was increased this year with a corresponding reduction in the number of brooks. Those streams which are to be stocked prior to opening day in Rappahannock County are as follows: Piney Branch, Rush River, Thornton River and North Fork.
