1 he secondary highway system will get $43.3 million for the coming fiscal year. Secondary funds are distributed by a four-factor formula, and a list of allocations to each county will be announced in April. Maintenance work, the industrial access highway proi gram and general operating l expenses will account for 1 the balance of anticipated revenue.
A public hearing will be held May 23 in Roanoke to consider allocations for the j Bristol, Salem, Lynchburg I and Staunton Districts. The Highway Commission will , move to Richmond the fol1 lowing day for a hearing I on funds allocated to the Suffolk, Richmond, Fredericksburg and Culpeper Districts.
The allocations do not necessarily indicate the location or scope of the new work to be started during the next fiscal year. Funds often are appropriated piecemeal to projects which may not reach the construction stage until later years. Of the estimated 209.6 mil! lion available for the high: way program in the next fiscal year, $126 million will come from state sources as fuel tax and motor vehicle license fees. Federalaid grants to the four highway systems will total $97.6 million. . More than $15 million of the state funds will be earmarked for such highway related agencies as the State Police and Division of Motor Vehicles.
