Planning to make garden soon? You should consider which growing vegtables are safest to eat if we should have radioactive fall out. These will be vegetables of low calcium content. Why? Strontium 90, the “bad-boy" in fall out that does us harm acts like calcium in so far as plant take-up is concerned. Therefore, vegetables low in calcium will be the safest. Green leafy vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage, kale, broccoli, spin* ach, turnip greens, celery, collards. . . NO. Potatoes, cereals, apples, tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn, squash, cucumbers . . . YES ... all of these are low in calcium content and thus will be low in strontium 90 were they grown on contaminated soil.
