Shorthorn beef bulls outperformed all other breeds to capture high average scores in all major categories of the annual Virginia BCIA Record - of - Performance Bull Test, here. At completion of the 140day test period, Shorthorn * bulls had out-averaged all b’ eds on total weight. £ orthorns averaged 999 pounds; Herefords 932 pounds; and Angus 903 pounds. Shorthorn bulls posted an average daily gain of 2.60 pounds; showed a type score of 13.3; and an index value of 153 -- highest for all three categories for the 140trial.
In lifetime performance, the Shorthorn averages outbested all breeds, as well, scoring 2.18 pounds average daily gain and 2.34 pounds weight per day of age. They chalked up a type score of 13.3 and an index value of 142. Herefords average lifetime index value was 137; [Angus, 134. A Shorthorn bull entered by Hillcrest Farm of Boones Mill, Va., received the highest index value score for lifetime performance-- 153. One-hundred and forty-two beef bulls were entered *ln the annual test.
