How To Prevent Power Mower Injuries Power mowers make the job of cutting the lawn a lot easier,- but like most machines they can be dangerous and even deadly if not operated with proper care. Most accidents happen to the toes and feet when attempting /to start the engine or when mowing on a hill or slope. If. you are not careful it is easy to slip and have the whirling blade roll back over your feet. A four-cycle engine spinning a 20-inch blade at 3000 revolutions per minute can pick up a nail or stone and hurl it 170 miles per hour. These may hit children or others in. the area and have caused a surprisingly high percentage of injuries to the eyes. To help prevent such accidents, Dr. L. O. Fears, Director of the Clarke-Frederick-Page - RappahannockWarren-Winchester Health District offered these timely tips today: (1) Check the lawn before cutting and remove stones, sticks and other objects. (2) Check all bolts, nuts and screws to see that they are properly tightened.

(5) Learn how to stop the mower’s engine quickly. (6) Keep children and pets at a safe distance from the mower, preferably Inside the house. (7) Stop engine before pushing mower across gravel driveways, walks or roads. (8) Be sure of footing when mowing slopes or when grass is wet. (9) Never plug in an electric mower when it's raining. (10) Never cut grass by pulling the mower toward you. ■
