Wheeler H. Cubbage
Wheeler Hurshell Cubbage, of Slate Mills and Fairfax, a foreman with the Virginia Department of Highways, died Thursday night, May 23, 1963 in Fairfax, following a sudden illness. Son of the late James Franklin Cubbage and Eliza Jenkins, his wife, he was a native of Madison County. He was 60. He .is survived by two sisters, Mrs'. Olney Kennedy of Slate Mills and Mrs. Gertie Smith of Etlan, and a number of nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Waver Kennedy of Slate Mills with whom he made his home in recent years. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 26, at the Geest funeral chapel, with interment following in Fair view Cemetery. The Rev. Dewey D.Underwood,pastor of Slate Mills Baptist Church of which Mr. Cubbage was a member, conducted the last rites. Pallbearers Otha Scroggins, Shelton Scroggins, James Smith, O. B. Smith, Jr., Walter Cubbage, Charles Kennedy, John Jenkins, and James Cubbage.
Mr. Cubbage was a veteran of World War II, serving in Company K, Seventeenth Infantry.
