Shenandoah has never had an adequate place In which to receive the millions of visitors, over 2 1/4 million in 1963, that travel ajong the Skyline Drive or hikd Park trails. The Big Meadows Visitor Center will have a spacious reception lobby. An auditorium, with seating for 275 people, will have autom atic projection equipment for illustrated programs to introduce visitors to Park features. A small museum is to tell of the changes in nature, caused by m an in the BlueRidge Mount ains and the mountains’ influence upon man.
A number of items of interest have been donated by individuals and the Shenandoah Natural History Association, of Luray, Virginia. The Association was formed in 1951 to help visitors understand and enjoy the Park through better literature, museum exhibits, and programs on the area. Mr. Ray Schaffner is the Executive Secretary of this organization and the Chief Park Naturalist responsible for collecting items for the museum. He would like to locate an original golden horseshoe which Governor Spotswood gave to his ■Knights" who crossed the Blue Ridge for the first time in 1716; a bugle or revolver used by George Freeman Pollock, founder of Skyland; a muzzle loader or flintlock and powder horn used a hundred years or more ago; f i s h i ng gear used by President Hoovei 'pn'fhq Iff* InSti used by father, Peter, who surveyec the Great Neck area of Virginia for Lord Fairfax; and many items used until recentkapidan
