Last month on March 7th, the Chester Gap Vol. Fire Co. observed it’s fourth anniversary. On Saturday night March 12th, 1960, some 35 men of Chester Gap gathered in the basement of Greeley’s Store and formed a Vol. Fire Co. Herman Williams was elected it’s first Chief and Merritt Greeley president. A $200.00 donation by the Citizens Assn, of Chester Gap was gratefully accepted and a few days later a Ham was donated by Sherman Williams from which $300 was realized. With this modest bankroll an ancient pumper was purchased on time, from Sperryville. Footings were poured for the foundation of the new 32 x 62 foot Fire Hall-Community Building. This building is now well along towards completion. On the first floor it has a three Bay area which houses it’s present 'fleet' of a recently acquired 500 gal. ChevroletMaxim Pumper, the old 250 gal pumper and a well equipped Ambulance. Most of the active members have taken a primary first aid course and plans are being made for

Madison Agent Office
Randall Updike, who has completed his studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and will receive his diploma at graduation in June, is presently working in Madison County with Assistant County Agent W. Rapley Owings. He arrived in Madison last week and will remain there until September when he will go the North Carolina to work on his master’s degree. Randall, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Updike, Washington was reared on a farm specializing in beef, sheep and swine. He is a graduate of Rappahannock County High School where he was active in 4-H work. During that time Mr. Owings was employed in the Rappahannock County Agents Office and had Updike as one of his 4-H boys.
