Holiday weekend traffic was extremely heavy In the area as people flocked to the country from the metropolitan area to the mountain for a first outing of the vacation season.
Trooper Paul Dicks reported a single vehicle accident which occurred at 3:30 a.m. on June 1 a mile and a half east of Washington on Route 211. John Walter Fanning of Arlington driving a ’61 Volkswagen Bkidded on wet pavement, careened to the left of the road, went up the bank and turned over back into the highway on its top. Fanning sustained lacerations of the neck and abrasions of the back. The vehicle was a total loss. A passenger in the car was not injured. On May 30 at 5:15 p.m. on Route 522 two miles west of Boston, Wilbur Lee Atkins of Sperryville overturned his 1964 Ford convertible result-' ing in $1,200 to $1,500 damages, according to Trooper W. A. Buntin. Atkins apparently lost control of the vehicle on a curve, ran off the right side of the highway and turned over.
