A new high in Memorial Day weekend travel was recorded in Shenandoah National Park this year, according to figures released today by Superintendent R. Taylor HosklnsJ Total visits reached 31,700 during that which for many was a three-day holiday, with Memorial Day having fallen on Saturday, Hoskins said. He added that near-perfect weath er helped to swell the holiday visitation. The total was 107% over the last extended Memorial Day weekend, which was in 1960 when 15,300 visits were recorded. It was recalled that during the 1960 holiday, however, there was considerable fog and rain. Prior to that there w ere 29,200 visits during the 1958 Memorial Day weekend, which, also was over a three-day period. The new Loft Mountain Camp ground was opened for the first time Friday. Hoskins said that there were 671 campers in the campground and all but 15 sites were used. These were not available pending further site preparation. The Loft Mountain Development is in the South District of the Park and is reached by an access road at approximately Mile 79.5. All other campgrounds in the Park were filled to capacity. Rangers estimated there were more than 2,600 campers in all.
