Melt butter or margarine In top of double boiler. Blend in flour and pepper. Add milk gradually and cook until smooth and thickened, stirring constantly. Add cheese and ham, stirring until cheese is melted. In separate bowl, combine egg, shortening- or oil and milk. Add corn meal and mix only until blended. Pour about % cup 'of batter for each batter cake onto lightly greased griddle. Bake until golden brown. Serve hot topped with Cheese-Ham Sauced 1 Makes 8 to 10 batter cakes (about 4 servings).
