A personal taste may be good or may need improvement. Genuine good taste means discrimination and judgment based on a knowledge of art principles. Good taste is a blend of thinking and feeling. A basic step in building good taste is to develop habits of observation. Begin studying the ways in which rooms are furnished . . noticing their color, the use of pattern and the selection and arrangement of furniture. Another step in acquiring good design sense is to widen your knowledge of color, furniture, textiles, and tableware.

A third step in developing good taste is to study design in terms of art principles before saying whether or not you like a design. Often people approach furnishing ideas or decorative objects from a personal angle and make a comment such as; *1 like it,* *1 don’t like it,* “I couldn't afford that.* A better approach is to study each object as an achievement in color and design.
Why develop good taste? A person gets much enjoyment from a beautiful object, he learns to enjoy it permanently whereas a less beautiful one would be pleasing for only a short time. Good taste has no price tag. When furnishings must last a long time, perhaps even a lifetime, a safe guide is that good design never goes out of style.
