ere who are suggesting that they may be used for conditioning and windrowing of hay. While these machines will sub stitute for a mower and conditioner, most of them require especially good management; and operating procedures fori satisfactory results. Hay that has been cut and conditioned in this manner will usually dry as fast, and sometimes even faster, than hay that has been mowed and conditioned in a more conventional manner. Special emphasis should be placed on both the ground speed and the rotary speed to obtain good results. High rotary speed often causes excessive chopping and loss of leaves, which makes the cured hay difficult to pick up off the ground. Fast ground speed may also result in uneven cutting and heavy stubble losses. Hay that has been cut, conditioned, and windrowed with this machine will probably still require a rake or some other machine for turning the windrow to speed up the drying on the bottom. It may cut down on the use of the rake, but I believe in most cases a rake would still be needed. I have had several field demonstrations of machines of this type, but in nearly every case, I ended up apologizing for the poor job they did. According to an Ohio Experiment Station report, the losses should not be greater than a 2 1/2 % increase over more conventional methods of mowing and conditioning with a crusher. They state that good management practices must be followed to obtain satisfactory results. According to this study, the regrowth characteristics of the crop (alfalfa) were the same for flail cut and mowed areas. As a general rule, they recommend .a, fast ground speed (travel) and a slow rotary speed."
