'Ambassador
Raymond Guest was unanimously confirmed as United States Ambassador to ireland by the Senate last week. He served as the State Senator from this district prior to the 1952 presidential election when he resigned his Democratic seat to work for the candidate on the Republican ticket. Dwight D. Mr. Guest was supported for appointment by both Virginia Senators and in Senator Robertson’s words of praise he went on to note that “one of the principal exports of Ireland was jumping horses, race horses and other horses* and therefore it was to the best interests of the country to select “one of the outstanding horse experts in the country as the new U. S. Ambassador to Ireland. The week before it was doubtful as to whether Mr. Guest would be unanimously approved after he told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Ireland “played a very big role in NATO*. Ireland has never belonged to NATO and remained neutral during the second World War. Another stumbling block to his appointment was that the State Department has a policy forbidding career employees from owning properties where they serve. Guest owns a 300acre farm in Ireland. Lack of knowledge of Irish politics and State Department policy were out weighed by making the appointment of an acknow ledged expert on the principal export of the country and by his generous contribution to both political parties.
