Planning the garden grounds :o have year-round interest requires careful thought. Viany gardens are beautiful In the spring but not during Jther seasons. Before one can intelligently select plant material for the nome grounds, it is essential to know about available types Df plant material. It is also important to know that plants have various forms and habits of growth and some are outstanding because of ornamental characteristics. Spring flowering bulbs provide color in early spring. Annuals grow from seed, bloom, set seed, and die within one growing season. These plants can supply color from early summer until frost. Biennials require 2 seasons from seed, blooming the second year. Perennials live for more than 3 seasons. Once planted, they require little care.
Woody plants are deciduous or evergreen. Deciduous plants drop their leaves before new ones are produced in the spring. Many spring-flowering shrubs and shade trees are deciduous. Evergreens retain their foliage throughout the year. In this group, there are 3 types: broadleaf evergreens include boxwood, magnolia, and hollies; needlelike evergreens include hemlock, pine, and taxus plants; scale-like evergreens include juniper, arborvitae, and chamaecypari8.
Ornamental characteristics the homeowner should consider are that plants can be grown for conspicuous flowers colorful bark and fruit, and foliage. When we consider these 4 characteristics a plan for something attractive throughout the year can be developed.
In planning a flower border, a combination of border shrubs, small trees, perennials, biennials, annuals, bulbs, and vines can be combined for year-round interest, Large plants are often needed to give scale.
