Spring Season Prospects Good
Based on the steadily increasing spring gobbler harvest over the past four years of experimental seasons and the general status of the state’s turkey population, the prospects look even better for a highly successful spring sea son in 1965. Last year spring gobbler enthusiasts bagged 403 birds compared to 80 in 1963 and 129 the year previous. Although they will be permitted to hunt in two less counties this year, hunters will have an extra Saturday during the April 24-May 1 season. Turkeys over the entire state showed a marked improvement in hatching success last fall except in the Tidewater section. Kill samples from the rest of the state indicated that 49 to 71 percent of the 1964 fall kill was juvenile birds compared to a kill of 29-67% juveniles over the same area the year Before.
