During the past year schools received 716 modern auto-* mobile-engines, 517 automatic transmissions, 269 differentials and rear axle assemblies, plus such other com ponents as air conditioners radios, Delcotron generators, power steering units, fuel pumps, power brakes, ignition systems,, and tool6 and fixtures for use by students in acquiring the rudiments of a mechanical education or in completing specific engineering courses in college.
During the school year ended August 31, 1964, General Motors automobile dealers .loaned 5,397 driver training cars to high schools throughout the United States. This was 25 per cent more than were loaned under the GMDealer Driver Training Program during the previous school year. Dealers received $1,599,250 in allowances from GM as its share of the cosponsored program. In the twelve month period more than 524,000 young men and women received driving instructions in automobiles provided by Chevrolet, Pontiac Oldsmobile and Buick dealers. As of the start of the current school year ,more than 3,200r 000 students had received driving training in the nine years of the program’s operation. General Motors has paid dealers a total of ,$7,376,937 under the program since its inception. “General Motors also offers educational opportunities to individual students," Mr. Gordon said.
