those of the public health sep vice. Any community with a muni cipal water supply can be assured its water supply is safe. In certain communities the chemicals used in the process of purifying the water under certain conditions may inter act and influence the taste and odor of the water. This quality may annoy the consumer, but it does not mean the water is unsafe to drink. Water is purified in 3 ways: Self-purification through normal oxidation and dilution in the stream, chemical and phy sical treatment by muni cipality, and biological and physical treatment of wastes discharged into the stream. The fact that water supplies are safe and adequate for todays’s needs will not protect us in the future. As thepopula tion increases, the need for water will increase. We must consider the many possibilities open to us to conserve our water supply. What can be done? Pollution is a people-made problem. There is no need to point a finger at anyone. All of us, by our very presence, contribute to pollution. Pollution abatement is everybody’s job. We can all insist on a cleanup of our streams, and we owe it to our children to introduce and allocate money to build more reservoirs to catch the water from melting snow and rainfall. We can all do our small part to prevent contamination by not thoughtless ly discarding raw filth into our streams.
