heifers of good conformation should be retained for herd replacements. Performance records are especially valuable here. Normally the top 40 percent of the heifer calves should be kept. They should be weighed as yearlings and any slow growers should be culled. The balance should be calved out as two-year olds and given a rigid culling after their first calves are weaned, according to performance. Weaning time is not merely a time when calves are weaned it is a time of evaluation — a reckoning day.
