ICC Allows Reduced
Rates on “Big Johns”
A significant decision by the Interstate Commerce Commission to allow the Southern Railway to continue its greatly reduced grain freight rates in "Big John* 100-ton freight cars has just been announced. The rates have been in effect since May 11, 1963 and average only about 60 per cent of the rates formerly being used. The commission had found, earlier, that the rates were too low but upon appeal to the Supreme Court the Commission had been instructed to review their findings and upon reconsideration approved Southern’s rates. Farm Bureau, and many other interested parties, had used their influence to attempt to have the lower rates preserved. The lower rates can have a significant effect on the livestock industry of ^the South by lowering feed costs. The decision will have a beneficial effect on the feed grain producing areas of the Mid-West. Agricultural economists assert that the lowered freight rates can save up to $40 million dollars for southern feed users each year.
