Death Toll Report
Richmond, Va.Through August of this year, Virginia experienced 683 traffic deaths as compared to 688 for the same period of 1964, Colonel C. W. Woodson, Jr., Chairman of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee and Superintendent of State Police announced today. Considerable reductions of from 112 to 75 in June and from 93 to 78 were experienced. August deaths stood at 121 for both years. Here, Colonel Woodson noted that both in Virginia and nationally August has replaced December as the high-death month. This occurred nationally in 1962 and has held true in all of the following years. In Virginia, last year was the first in which August deaths exceeded those of December.
Colonel Woodson agreed with the National Safety Council in that heavy summer traffic and school vacations were factors and added, "Times a re prosperous and people have the money to travel. Consequently, we see heavy and dangerous traffic on summer
