Blue Cross and Blue Shield are designing special programs that will supplement and extend Medicare without any duplication of benefits. The combination of Medicare with Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s additional coverage will give you the most comprehensive benefits ever made available to persons 65 years of age or older. Watch for announcements from Blue Cross and Blue Shield about these special programs. They will be ready SUMMARY OF IMPORTANT POINTS 1. Medicare is a two part program. Part A for Hospital Benefits is automatically provided to persons receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Benefits. All others must sign up at their local Social Security office. Part B for physicians' service is a voluntary medical insurance program which costs you $3 per month. You must enroll before March 31,1966, to be eligible for benefits. 2. If you have Blue Cross and Blue Shield or commercial health insurance, continue your coverage until July 1,1966, the effective date of Medicare. 3. After July 1, 1966, Blue Cross and Blue Shield will not duplicate Medicare Benefits for those eligible for the government program. However, Blue Cross and Blue Shield coverage will supplement and extend Medicare Benefits for persons participating in the Medicare program. 4.
