Frequently the builder is blamed for cracked foundation walls when it was the nature of the soil that was unsuited for a home site. 'Above foundation and wall cracked because the house was built on clayey soil that shrinks when dry and swells when wet. How can you tell if the site you have chosen is suitable? In most cases the simplest method is to check the Rappahannock soil survey.
