Another way would be to collect soil samples at varying depths (depending on depth of basement) wet the soil to the consistency of putty, place in a container as shown above. When it dried, this plastic clay shrunk away from the edge of the container. Clays of this kind will cause damage to foundations, roads, and streets by shrinking when dry and swelling when wet.—W. H.
